Platelet-rich plasma therapy recently became popular as a skin-rejuvenating facial technique using the participant’s blood, also known virally as the “vampire facial.” It made a massive impact because of the results; youthful, glowing skin that many products bought online or at the store could not achieve.
Platelet-rich plasma can also be used in a similar method of hair loss treatment to activate growth in scalps with thinning hair. The plasma in a patient’s blood contains platelets and white blood cells used as growth factors. These growth factors act as messengers by sending signals to your skin cells and telling them to carry out their functions.
This technique of using growth factors for healthcare treatments isn’t new at all! In fact, for years they have been used to treat age-related issues such as arthritis and natural signs of aging. In this case, they are used to stimulate hair follicles and promote growth in problem areas.
As included with any treatment using a patient’s bodily fluids, a careful procedure is undertaken to ensure the best results. Medical personnel draws the patient’s blood in a standard fashion from the arm, then place it in a centrifuge (a machine that spins the vial of blood until the plasma is separated).
This platelet-rich plasma is then meticulously injected, approximately at every half inch of the area of thinning hair, into the scalp at the hair follicle level. The procedure takes around half an hour to complete.
A note for those interested but worried about pain or the risks involved, you’ll be happy to hear that most patients require no numbing at all. The pain is minimal, but if experienced, a cold compress or regular pain killer is the recommended solution. Light bruising is possible in the areas of injection but usually clears up within a few weeks.
A warm shower is beneficial in the days following as the warm water will help the blood circulate through the scalp. Treat your scalp gently for the next few days and avoid using any chemicals, such as hair dye, products, or harsh routines that could damage the treated area.
Consistency of the treatment is the key to results. The procedure is typically recommended once a month for the first three months, then again every three to six months depending on individual results.
Following this schedule, one could realize growth within the first few months! Decreased hair shedding is usually the first noted result of the treatments by patients, along with increased length of hair and early regrowth.
Platelet-rich plasma treatments are an amazing and scientifically backed method of hair growth for virtually anyone who experiences hair thinning or loss. It is, however, most effective for those with early signs of hair loss. Not only patients with age-related issues are candidates, but those with androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness that can occur as early as the teen years or early twenties) also see effectiveness with plasma treatments.
